The Golden Eagles (25-14 overall, 11-6 Sun Belt) won for the fourth-straight time as they run-ruled the Warhawks (17-21, 5-12) for the second consecutive day for a league series win.
Joining Stockman as a hitting star for the Golden Eagles was Slade Wilks, who added three hits and three RBI. Wilks has now hit safely for a career-best 12 consecutive games.
The visitors, though, took an early 3-0 advantage as they scored all their runs off Golden Eagle starter Colby Allen. ULM tallied their first run in the second on an RBI fielder's choice from Jake Haggard, before a two-run, third-inning home run from Shawn Weatherbee to complete the Warhawks' scoring. It was Weatherbee's fifth homer of the year.
The Golden Eagles, which scored 10 runs against the Warhawks in Friday night's contest, added six more tallies in the third of this game to take the lead in the contest for good.
After a pair of walks to open the bottom of the third, Ozzie Pratt delivered a bunt single to load the bases. A bases-loaded walk to Nick Monistere accounted for the first run, before Wilks tripled down the right field line to empty the bases and give Southern Miss a 4-3 advantage.
Wilks then scored on a Davis Gillespie single. Gillespie went to second on a ULM fielding error and then scored on a single by Stockman to make the score 6-3.
Southern Miss added two more runs in the fifth on a run-scoring single by Matthew Russo, before Pratt added a sacrifice fly.
A five-run eighth from the home team ended the game early, as Wilks opened the frame with a double. After a walk and an out, Billy Butler singled in a run. Russo was then hit by a pitch to load the bases, before ULM went to their bullpen.
Stockman greeted Davis Oswalt – the fifth Warhawk pitcher of the day - with an opposite field grand slam to right field, the first of his Golden Eagle career and fourth homer of the season to end the contest.
Will Armistead, who came in for Allen out of the pen, limited the Warhawks to one hit and one walk over four innings with five walks to get the victory and improved to 1-1.
ULM starter Beau Blanchard (2-4) allowed four runs on two hits and three walks with three strikeouts to suffer the loss.
The final game of the set takes place, Sunday, at 1 p.m.
