The Golden Eagles led 7-6 heading into the final frame. Kole Myers led off the ninth with a single for Troy. He then tried to stretch an extra base on a single by the next batter, Ethan Cavanagh, but was gunned down at third by Carson Paetow. Golden Eagle reliever Colby Allen then walked Will Butcher before Brooks Bryan hit a ball to right that Paetow slipped on and got by him for a two-run triple to give the visitors the lead. Tremayne Cobb, Jr., then grounded out to short on a drawn in infield to plate the Troy final run.
The Golden Eagles got one run in the final frame on a RBI single from Tucker Stockman, but stranded a pair of runners when the one-run game ended.
Southern Miss had trailed 6-4 heading into the bottom of the eighth when Davis Gillespie homered off the scoreboard with one out for his fourth of the year. Nick Monistere then walked with pinch hitter Matthew Russo then gave the Golden Eagles two runners and which would be at second and third following a dribbler in front of the plate by Gabe Broadus to make it two outs. Dalton McIntyre was then intentionally walked, giving Ozzie Pratt the opportunity to single in two runs to left to allow Southern Miss to take its final lead.
Troy went ahead for the first lead in the top half of that inning on a Kyle Mock RBI single and a balk by Allen which plated the second run.
The Golden Eagles had jumped out initially 2-0 in the second. After a groundout, Gillespie singled through the right side with Monistere following with hitting a pitch off the scoreboard in the left center for his fourth homer of the year.
Troy then tied the game in the fifth as they took advantage of a Golden Eagle error in the frame. The first run was plated on a double steal with runners at the corners before tying the game on a wild throw on a double play ball that let the lead runner scorer on from third.
Southern Miss regained the advantage with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth on a bases-loaded walk to Billy Butler followed by a sacrifice fly from Paetow, but Mock's two-run homer in the sixth, his third of the year, tied the game at 4-4.
Noah Manning, the fourth of four Troy pitchers, registered the victory and improved to 4-0 by limiting the Golden Eagles to a run on three hits over 1 2/3 innings with a walk and two strikeouts.
Allen, the third Southern Miss pitcher, allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits and one walk with four strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 3-1.
The deciding game of the series is set to take place Saturday at 1 p.m.
