HATTIESBURG, Miss. – A two-run seventh for Southern Miss unknotted a tie game and the Golden Eagles went on to a 5-3 series-clinching victory over Troy Saturday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
Dalton McIntyre, Slade Wilks, and Nick Monistere each had two of the Golden Eagles seven hits in the contest as the home squad improved to 18-10 overall and 6-3 in Sun Belt play this season.
For the 14th time this season, the Golden Eagles scored in the opening frame, getting three tallies to jump out to the early lead in this contest. They improved to 11-3 in those games that they have done that.
With the game tied at 3-3 in the seventh, the Golden Eagles took the lead for good with their pair of runs. A flyout opened the inning before Monistere singled. A strikeout then followed before Gabe Broadus was walked.
McIntyre, the team's leadoff hitter, collected a two-out single to center to drive in Monistere. Broadus tried to get an extra base to third on the play and the Trojan catcher's throw off a cutoff went into the outfield, allowing the second run to score.
It was also McIntyre who opened the first by reaching on a fielding error by Troy second baseman Ethan Kavanagh. After a strikeout, Wilks doubled to left center to play McIntyre for the game's first run. Carson Paetow then came up following a groundout and blasted a two-run homer to right center for his sixth of the year.
Troy got one back with a solo home run from Kyle Mock in the second, blasting his fourth of the year.
That was the only blemish off Golden Eagle starter Will Armistead who limited the Trojans (18-11, 4-5) just two hits over 5 1/3 innings with a pair of walks, a hit batsman and a career-high 10 strikeouts.
With the Golden Eagles up 3-1 in the sixth, Armistead was replaced by Chandler Best after the starter gave up a one-out single. Troy then tied the game on Best's first pitch with a Brooks Bryan home run to left, for his seventh of the year.
Best only allowed one hit and one run over 1 2/3 innings and fanned three to earn the victory to improve to 1-0 on the year.
Troy reliever Logan Ross allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk with two strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 2-2.
The Golden Eagles return to action Tuesday when they travel to Southeastern Louisiana for a 6 p.m. contest in Hammond, La.
