HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Carson Paetow had three hits and drove in three runs to lead Southern Miss over Tulane 9-4 in non-conference baseball action Tuesday evening at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
Paetow was a triple shy of the cycle in the contest as he singled, doubled and homer in the game to lift the Golden Eagles to a 16-9 record.
With the score tied at 2-2 in the fifth, the Golden Eagles broke open the game by tallying four runs.
After an out, both Billy Butler and Paetow walked before Davis Gillespie singled to load the bases. Nick Monistere, who hit a grand slam here last season against Tulane to put the team ahead in that contest, doubled on a high chop over the third baseman's head to knock in a pair of go-ahead runs. Catcher Lawson Odom then accounted for the other two runs with a single up the middle to make the score 6-2.
Paetow helped to extend the lead by a run an inning later with an RBI double before Slade Wilks made the score 9-2 with a two-run double in the seventh.
Southern Miss initially had jumped out in front with a solo run in the opening frame. With two outs, Wilks walked and went to second on a Butler single. Paetow then followed with a single up the middle to drive home Wilks.
Paetow then extended the lead two innings with a homer to right field, a solo shot for his fifth of the year, to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 advantage.
Tulane, though, tied the score in the fifth with a two-run homer of its own, by Brock Slaton, who collected his third of the year.
The Green Wave (15-10) also added a two-run shot in the eighth by Teo Banks, his sixth of the year, to complete the game's scoring.
Golden Eagle reliever JW Armistead (1-1) threw an inning and gave up two runs on two hits with a strikeout to garner the victory, while Tulane starter Michael Lombardi (1-2) suffered the loss by allowing three runs on four hits with four walks and five strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings.
Southern Miss returns to action with a Thursday-Saturday Sun Belt Conference series against Troy. The series opener will start at 6 p.m.
