Baseball Travels to Pearl to Face In-State Foe Ole Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss takes to the road for the first of a four-game road swing this week when they travel to Pearl, Tuesday, to face nationally ranked Ole Miss in a 6 p.m. contest at Trustmark Park.

The game can be viewed via ESPN+ as well as heard through an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network as well as through SouthernMiss.com.

The Golden Eagles (14-6) have won four-straight contests and jumped into a couple of national polls this week at No. 25. The Rebels are ranked as high as No. 17 in the Baseball America poll as they enter the game 15-6 and are the designated home team.

Southern Miss their second season of Sun Belt Conference play with a three-game home sweep of Marshall last weekend, outscoring the Thundering Herd 17-10 in the series. Southern Miss has now won nine of 11 Sun Belt Conference series, including five sweeps.

Under 24th-year coach Mike Bianco, Ole Miss enters the game having taken two of three at home over South Carolina over the weekend in its SEC opener. The Sunday loss snapped a nine-game winning streak for the Rebels, who meet the Golden Eagles at least once in a season dating back to the 1990 campaign.

This will be the 38th time Southern Miss will play at Trustmark Park since they first played Ole Miss during the 2006 campaign, a game they won 13-6 over the Rebels. Southern Miss is 19-18 all-time at the facility that also houses the Mississippi Braves, a AA affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. Southern Miss is 8-7 over Ole Miss here, 5-8 against Mississippi State, 2-0 vs. Alabama, 1-0 vs. Tulane, ULM and Rice, 1-1 vs. Houston and 0-1 versus East Carolina and Memphis. The 2011 and 2012 Conference USA Tournaments were also played at this facility.

Senior right-hander Cole Boswell is scheduled to make his fourth start of the season against Ole Miss. He has appeared in four games and not compiled a record with a 5.87 ERA. He has 11 strikeouts and seven walks in 7 2/3 innings. He went 2 2/3 innings in his first start against Nicholls (2/21) and allowed no runs on a hit and a walk with two strikeouts in a no decision. He also started versus Mississippi State in Pearl and allowed two runs on a hit with two walks and four strikeouts over two innings in a no decision. Against Alabama last week, he went 1 2/3 innings with three walks and no strikeouts, not allowing a run or a hit.

The last time Ole Miss and Southern Miss met at Trustmark Park, on March 28, 2023, the game was called in the bottom of the fourth inning with Southern Miss leading 2-1 due to unplayable field conditions. The game was called after several instances of sod dislodged from the field causing players to slip. The game was called a no contest and was not replayed.

Following the matchup with Ole Miss, the Golden Eagles next travel to Statesboro, Ga., for the first time for a three-game Sun Belt series at Georgia Southern. Southern Miss opens the set with a Friday 5:30 p.m. CT contest.
