HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Carson Paetow belted a seventh-inning, three-run home run to break open a close game in helping Southern Miss to complete a Sun Belt Conference sweep of Marshall Sunday afternoon in a 7-5 victory at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (14-6 overall, 3-0 Sun Belt) won for the fourth-straight game and defeated the Thundering Herd (6-13, 0-3) for the 11th time in a row with the triumph.
With the score tied at 2-2 in the seventh, Ozzie Pratt led off with a walk. After an out, Nick Monistere was then hit by a pitch. After another out, Billy Butler singled in Pratt before Paetow homered to center field for his fourth of the year which gave the Golden Eagles a 6-2 advantage.
The Golden Eagles added one more in the eighth on a Dalton McIntyre sacrifice fly, before Marshall made the game close with three runs in the ninth, coming on an RBI double from Peralta and a two-run double from Tre Hondras.
Southern Miss took the early lead with a pair of runs in the third inning. Pratt, who along with Butler had two hits, doubled with one out. After a groundout, Monistere singled in the first run. An error then let Slade Wilks reach before Butler drove in a run with a single. Wilks, though, was thrown out at the plate to end the frame.
The Thundering Herd chipped away at the deficit with solo runs in the fifth and sixth innings. A Kebler Peralta RBI groundout accounted for the first run in the fifth, before Elijah Vogelsong added a run-scoring single one frame later to tie the game at 2-2.
Golden Eagle reliever McCarty English pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief in which he allowed three runs on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts to earn the victory and improve to 1-0. JB Middleton got the last batter to earn his second save.
Griffin Miller, who came out of the Marshall bullpen, gave up four runs on three hits over 3 2/3 innings with four walks and seven strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 3-2.
The Golden Eagles return to action Tuesday as they make their second trip to Pearl this season. Southern Miss will meet Ole Miss in a 6 p.m., contest and will be the designated visiting team.
