HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Lawson Odom scored in the bottom of the 13th on an obstruction call at home plate following a video review in lifting Southern Miss to a 2-1 series-clinching victory over Marshall Saturday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (13-6 overall, 2-0 Sun Belt) won for the third time in a row, while Marshall fell to 6-11 and 0-2.
In this pitcher's duel, Southern Miss played its longest game in terms of innings since a 6-5 13-inning victory at Charlotte on April 10, 2022.
In the deciding frame, Odom was hit by a pitch with one out. He later stole second and tried to score when the next batter, Ozzie Pratt, singled. Odom raced to the plate and was initially ruled out on the play after a strong throw from Marshall right fielder Calin Smith.
The play was then video reviewed, and the Marshall coaches were informed of catcher's obstruction before awarding the winning run to the Golden Eagles.
Bryce Blevins and Billy Oldham, both team's starting pitchers, each enjoyed no hitters into the eighth as both pitchers first hits allowed were home runs.
Elijah Vogelsong hit the first long ball, his fourth of the year and second of the weekend, in the top half of the inning off Oldham, while Davis Gillespie, hit his third of the year off Blevins to tie the score.
Blevins finished with nine-plus innings of work and gave up a run on two hits with two walks and four strikeouts over 90 pitches, while Oldham covered eight innings and gave up a run on two hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.
Colby Allen then threw 4 1/3 shutout frames for the Golden Eagles with a career-best seven strikeouts and two walks to go along with three hits, while JB Middleton got the final two outs and earn the victory to improve to 1-0.
Nicolas Weyrich threw the final 3 1/3 innings for Marshall and gave up an unearned run on a hit with five strikeouts to fall to 0-1.
The two teams finish the series with a 4 p.m. series finale Sunday. The game time was pushed back due to expected rainy weather Sunday.
