Four-Run Seventh Lifts Southern Miss in Series Opener over Indiana State
3/1/2024 9:33:00 PM | Baseball
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss used a four-run seventh and Niko Mazza was solid for seven innings on the mound as the Golden Eagles defeated Indiana State 5-1 Friday night at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles improved to 7-3 on the season, while the Sycamores fell to 7-2 as they dropped their second consecutive game.
With the game tied at 1-1, Seth Smith and Lawson Odom each walked to open the seventh. After a sacrifice bunt by Gabe Broadus to move the runners up a base, Dalton McIntyre gave the Eagles the lead with a two-run single up the middle. McIntyre then scored on a fly ball to right two batters later by Slade Wilks, whose drive was lost in the lights on a foggy night.
Wilks converted that to an inside-the-park home run, the first for the Golden Eagles since Marc Bourgeois did it at UAB on March 26, 2010, for his second homer of the year to complete the game's scoring.
Mazza matched his career-best of seven innings as he allowed a run on three hits with a walk and eight strikeouts to get the victory and improve to 2-0. His only blemish was a solo home run by the second batter of the game, Randal Diaz, which was his second of the year.
The Golden Eagles tied the score with a run of their own in the bottom of the first. After back-to-back singles from McIntyre and Ozzie Pratt, Billy Butler loaded the bases with a one-out walk. After another strikeout, Matthew Russo walked to drive in McIntyre.
Southern Miss also turned four double plays in the contest, which was the most since turning that many against Mississippi State, March 3, 2021.
Sycamore reliever Zach Davidson gave up four runs over the final 2 2/3 innings on two hits and three walks with two strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 1-1. Indiana State starter Jacob Pruitt gave up just a lone run on three hits over 5 1/3 frames and walked five with 11 strikeouts.
Game two of the series is set to take place, Saturday, at 2 p.m.
