BILOXI, Miss. – Basiel Williams lofted a two-run double in between three Southern Miss fielders in short left field to cap a three-run, 10-inning to lead Nicholls to a 6-5 victory over the Golden Eagles Tuesday night at Shuckers Ballpark.
The Golden Eagles (6-3) lost their first extra inning game of the season, while the Colonels improved to 8-1 snapping a three-game losing streak to Southern Miss.
With the score tied 3-3 to start the final frame, Nicholls got a four-pitch walk to open the frame. After a sacrifice bunt, a single by Parker Coddou drove in the first run with a single. After a hit by pitch and an intentional walk to load the bases, Williams sliced the ball to left to plate two more runners.
The Golden Eagles, though, did not go quietly in the bottom of the 10th. Slade Wilks, who had a career-high four hits, and Carson Paetow collected consecutive singles to open the final frame. A walk then loaded the bases. After a strikeout, Dalton McIntyre singled in a run before Gabe Broadus knocked in a run with a groundout. Seth Smith then grounded out to second to end the game.
The Colonels drew blood first in the fourth by exploding for three runs. With one out, Chandler Best walked a batter and then gave up a single to Basiel Williams to put runners at the corners. After a balk was called on Best to score the first run, he got an out on a comebacker before allowing another walk to end his evening.
Peyton Lacy entered the game and gave up a stolen base to put runners at second and third before Cade Crosby singled both runners in to make the score 3-0.
Southern Miss cut into the deficit with an opposite field home run from Wilks in the sixth for his first of the year and 33rd for his career.
It was then a two-run inning in the seventh for the Golden Eagles to tie the score. After back-to-back one-out singles from Matthew Russo and Gabe Broadus, Smith knocked both runners home with a single.
Nico Saltafamaggio threw 2 1/3 relief innings and allowed two runs on three hits with a walk and a strikeout to collect the win and go to 3-0. Michael Guerrero threw one pitch to end the game and earned his first save of the year.
Landen Payne, the fifth of seven Golden Eagle pitchers, walked the leadoff hitter in the 10th and suffered the loss to fall to 0-1. He allowed a run on a hit, with a walk and a strikeout.
The Golden Eagles return home this weekend when they entertain last year's NCAA Super Regional squad Indiana State. The three-game set begins Friday at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field with a 6 p.m., start.
