The Golden Eagles (4-1) recorded both season highs for runs and hits (12) as they scored four times in three separate innings.
Southern Miss jumped out with four runs in the opening frame. UNO starter Ryan Delorbe issued four walks in the first frame and got only two outs, with the fourth walk issued to Monistere driving in the game's first run. The Privateers (2-2) then went to the bullpen and were greeted right away with a bases-clearing double from Matthew Russo, his first of two doubles in the contest.
UNO collected three runs in their half of the frame off starter Chandler Best – his first appearance since June 6, 2022 after missing last season with injury – for his only inning of work to cut the gap.
Up 4-3, Southern Miss extended the lead with a two-run homer in the third by Monistere, his first of the season. The Golden Eagles then added four more tallies in the fourth on a two-run double from Carson Paetow, an RBI fielder's choice from Monistere and a wild pitch to make the score 10-3.
The Privateers cut the gap to 10-4 on a solo home run by Miguel Useche, before Gabe Broadus added an RBI single in the seventh.
UNO then cut the visitors' lead to 11-7 with a three-run homer by Mitchell Sanford in their half of the seventh.
It was the Golden Eagles, though, that answered again in the eighth with their third four-run frame with Monistere knocking in his final run with a single. Russo then added two more RBI with a single, before Seth Smith added an RBI groundout.
The Privateers closed the final gap with three more runs in the final inning, but Landen Payne was able to register the final two outs to preserve the win.
Golden Eagle reliever Chase Adams retired all 10 batters he faced with four strikeouts to garner the win and improve to 1-0. Southern Miss posted a season-high 14 strikeouts over eight different pitchers.
Delorbe suffered the loss and fell to 0-2.
The Golden Eagles return to action Friday when they play Missouri State for the first of a three-game weekend series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
