
Seth Smith’ Eighth-Inning Double Lifts Baseball over Missouri State 4-3 Friday Night

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Seth Smith doubled over the Missouri State left fielder in the bottom of the eighth to drive in the go-ahead run in leading Southern Miss to a 4-3 baseball victory at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field Friday night.
The Golden Eagles (5-1) won for the third-straight game as they captured their fourth consecutive victory over the Bears (3-2).
With the game tied at 3-3, Nick Monistere opened the bottom of the eighth with a walk. After a Matthew Russo sacrifice bunt, the left-handed hitting Smith registered his first collegiate hit by lifting a 2-0 Garrett Ferguson pitch over a drawn in Jake McCutcheon's head and Monistere scored on the play.
The Bears jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the third. After a McCucheon leadoff single and a pair of outs, Logan Chambers and Caden Bogenpohl delivered consecutive RBI doubles off Golden Eagle starter Niko Mazza.
Southern Miss then took their initial lead in the bottom of the frame by scoring three runs by taking advantage of three-straight walks to open the frame. After the three walks, Bear starter Michael Lindsey saw hit day come to an end as he finished with two-plus innings and gave up three runs on no hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
The Golden Eagles then collected back-to-back sacrifice flies from Ozzie Pratt and Slade Wilks before a bloop double to center by Carson Paetow knocked in the final tally. Paetow led the home squad with two hits.
Missouri State tied the score in the fourth on a leadoff home run by Zack Stewart to deadlock the game at 3-3.
Mazza, who did not figure in the decision, allowed three runs over six innings on seven hits and no walks with seven strikeouts Sivley (1-1) then threw 2 2/3 frames in which he did not allow a run on a hit and a walk with two strikeouts to earn the victory. McCarty English then got the final out to earn his first save. Ferguston (0-1) suffered the loss by allowing a run on two hits with two walks and a strikeout.
The two teams continue the series with 1 p.m., Saturday contest.
