The Golden Eagles (3-1) bounced back from their first setback the previous day to Marist.
It was Air Force, though, that jumped out early against Southern Miss with a second-inning solo run. After retiring the Falcons in order in the first, Will Armistead hit the first two batters of the second. After a strikeout and a single, Van Klein knocked in the game's first run with a fielder's choice.
After that Armistead was almost unhittable as he fanned the last batter of the second and then struck out the next five to tally six strikeouts in a row, before giving up his last two base runners of the game in the fourth with a two-out single and walk. He then got out of the frame with a fielder's choice before getting AFA in order the next inning to finish his start with five innings.
Armistead struck out a career-best nine and walked just one as he allowed a run on two hits, leaving the game with a 2-1 lead.
That lead came courtesy of a RBI single by Dalton McIntyre in the third and then and run-scoring single from Lawson Odom in the fourth.
The Falcons, though, retook the lead off of reliever Colby Allen as he gave up a leadoff triple to open the sixth to Jay Thomason who scored one batter later on a groundout to second. After a strikeout, Aerik Joe singled and stole second before scoring on a ground ball to short which was thrown high, which allowed the go-ahead run to score.
But it was a sixth-inning rally for the Golden Eagles that accounted for three runs that gave them the lead for good. Ozzie Pratt, who doubled twice in the game, got his first one to open the inning. After a groundout, Branden Luke drove in Pratt with a single to tie the game at 3-3. After a single by Odom to put runners at the corners, pinch hitter Davis Gillespie was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Southern Miss then scored on a bases loaded walk to Gabe Broadus and Slade Wilks being hit by pitch.
After Pratt's second double an inning later, Paetow homered over the right-center field wall for his first of the year and extended the lead to 7-3.
The Falcons (1-3) picked up two final runs in the eighth on respective RBI doubles from Jake Greiving and Chris Stallings.
After giving up the lead in the sixth, Allen registered the victory to improve to 1-0, allowing two runs on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Landen Payne hurled the final 1 2/3 and surrendered two hits, while fanning one to collect his first save.
Golden Eagle pitching accounted for 13 strikeouts and only two walks.
Falcon reliever Bowen Brantingham suffered the loss and fell to 0-1 after allowing three runs on four hits with a walk and a strikeout over 2 1/3 innings.
Southern Miss returns to action Wednesday as they take to the road for the first time to face New Orleans. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. at Maestri Field.
