HATTIESBURG, Miss.— The Southern Miss Golden Eagles are slated to host Mississippi Valley State for their first home match of the season on Aug. 26 at 5:30 p.m.
This will mark the eleventh meeting between the two teams. The Golden Eagles lead the all-time series record 9-1-0 against The Delta Devils.
Last time out: The Golden Eagles enter the weekend after falling 4-1 to LSU in Baton Rouge on Aug. 20. Tiger forward Mollie Baker secured two goals, establishing an early 2-0 lead during the first half. The Black and Gold managed to keep the Tigers off the board for the rest of the period, but LSU was able to net another goal just nine minutes into the second half. The 64th minute saw freshman Rebecca Vega seizing an opportunity to score her first collegiate goal, also marking the team's first of the season. Regrettably, Hermannsdottir found the net again, extending the lead by three. The Golden Eagles struggled against the two brace efforts by the Tigers. Goalkeepers Alex Helbling and Maddie Ellis combined for three saves throughout the match.
Scouting Mississippi Valley State: Last weekend, Valley State suffered their second loss of the season against Mercer, losing 4-0. While trailing 1-0 as they entered the second half, they struggled to counter Mercer's rapid scoring spree. Remarkably, three goals were scored by Mercer within four minutes. Despite making subsequent efforts, the Delta Devils couldn't convert them into goals. The Delta Devils keeper faced a total of 27 shots and managed to make 13 saves. The team is under the guidance of first-year head coach Kayleigh Lambrechts.
The matchup is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex. Streaming and live stats will be available. Entry is free for all home games, and complimentary popsicles will be offered at the marketing table while supplies last.
