HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- On Saturday night, The Southern Miss Soccer team (1-2-0, 0-0-0 SBC) secured a 2-1 victory against Mississippi Valley State (0-3-0, 0-0-0 SWAC) at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
Attempting to take the lead early on, the Golden Eagles launched an attack as midfielder Shaelynn Quick aimed a shot towards the bottom center of the net at the two-minute mark. However, the MVSU keeper managed to make the save. The Devilettes scored first, with Valley State forward Jaslyn Sanders finding the net unassisted after eight minutes.
In the first half, the Black and Gold took several shots, and their efforts paid off when forward Parker Martin, assisted by Rebecca Vega, scored eleven minutes before halftime. This marked Martin's first collegiate goal as well as her first of the season.
Possession changed frequently throughout the rest of the match, and the tie was broken in the 70th minute. A shot deflected off the Valley backline, allowing midfielder Adaira Nakano from the Black and Gold to slip it past the keeper. This goal marked Nakano's first of her career and of the season.
The last instance of Southern Miss winning a match in which the opponent scored first was during the semifinals of the 2021 Conference USA Championships. Back then, UAB took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute. Nonetheless, the Black and Gold rallied in the second half, scoring two goals to secure a 2-1 victory and advance to the championship game against Old Dominion.
On the defensive front, goalkeeper Alex Helbling faced seven shots and made five saves. Offensively, the team's 24 shots in this game were the most since two years ago when the Golden Eagles attempted 27 shots against Nicholls State.
Up Next: The Golden Eagles will welcome Northwestern State on Aug. 31 at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex. The matchup is slated for 4 p.m., and streaming and live stats will be available.
