The Golden Eagles (23-15 overall, 11-7 Sun Belt) snapped a three-game losing streak as they scored nine runs over the final two innings, including a four-run eighth.
Down 7-4 in the eighth, Reece Ewing opened the inning with a fly ball to left that was dropped. Tate Parker, who came into the game earlier as a pinch hitter, doubled to right-center to tie the game. Etzel then scored Parker before Slade Wilks added a two-run single and Christopher Sargent notched a run-scoring single of his own.
Now up 11-7, Southern Miss added insurance runs in the ninth. Parker opened the frame with a solo homer to left for his third round-tripper of the year before Etzel added a sacrifice fly and Slade Wilks homered to right, a two-run shot, for his 15th long ball this season.
A four-run first inning gave the Golden Eagles the early advantage. Etzel opened the game with a home run to right-center field for his first long ball of the season. It marked the first homer to open a game since Carson Paetow got one against LSU on June 6, 2022.
After a couple of outs, both Sargent and Danny Lynch each walked. Reece Ewing then singled in Sargent with a single to right. Paetow knocked in the other two runners with a double off the center field wall.
The Chanticleers (26-12, 13-5) took advantage of a Golden Eagle error to score four runs of their own in the third. After a walk to lead off the frame, Payton Eeles slashed one to left-center that Etzel dropped putting runners on second and third. After RBI singles from Graham Brown and Caden Bodine, Armistead got a couple of strikeouts before surrendering a double off the right-center field wall to tie the score.
CCU then took the lead with three more runs in the fifth. The Chanticleers got things going with a walk with one out. A double by Nick Lucky then put runners at second and third before Chad Born drove in both runs with a single. Born later scored on an RBI double from Blake Barthol.
The Golden Eagles then cut the gap with a two-run homer from Ewing. Lynch initially reached on a fielding error by the Chanticleers second baseman, before Ewing's shot hit the top of the center field wall and bounded over for his third homer of the year.
Southern Miss tried to cut into their one-run deficit in the seventh, loading the bases with one out, but fanned twice to end the stanza.
Dustin Dickerson saw his team-best 17-game hitting streak end.
The Golden Eagles finish their current five-game road swing with a Tuesday night matchup at Tulane. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
