Baseball Stays on Road for Midweek Matchup at Alabama

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – After winning a Sun Belt Conference series over the weekend at Old Dominion, the Southern Miss baseball team returns to the road for a midweek matchup, Tuesday, April 11, with Alabama. Game time is set for 6 p.m., at Sewell-Thomas Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
The game can be seen on the SEC+ Network as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
The Alabama contest marks the seventh of eight contests road games for the Golden Eagles (19-11) as they are currently in a string of playing 12 of 16 games away from Pete Taylor Park. Southern Miss is currently 5-2 during this current stretch, including a 4-2 road record. Southern Miss defeated Old Dominion two of three games over the weekend, outscoring the Monarchs 22-18.
This will be the third-straight year the Golden Eagles will meet Alabama (23-10) during the regular season. Southern Miss is 2-1 over that stretch and has won 6 of the last 10 games. Under Scott Berry, Southern Miss is 8-6 against Alabama.
Former Golden Eagle, Will McGillis, collected a two-run, go-ahead double and seven Southern Miss pitchers limited Alabama to a pair of runs as the Golden Eagles defeated the Crimson Tide 3-2 last season at Pete Taylor Park.
Southern Miss sends freshman right-hander JB Middleton (Yazoo City, Miss./Benton Academy) to the mound against the Crimson Tide. He will be making his 7th appearance and first start as he has posted an 0-2 record with a 9.82 ERA. Middleton has a season-high four strikeouts twice this season.
In the ODU series, the Golden Eagles won the third of their fourth ever Sun Belt Conference series winning 2 games to 1, to improve to 2-1 in league series on the road. Southern Miss enjoyed 14 extra-base hits in the series (11 doubles, 1 triple, 2 home runs) to five for the Monarchs and both Dustin Dickerson and Slade Wilks hit safely in all three games to each run their current hitting streak to a team-best 10 games.
Ten of the 20 RBIs over the weekend for the Golden Eagles came after when two were out. Two of those came from freshman Nick Monistere, who made his first start as a position player (2B) in the nightcap. He finished two-for-four with a triple and three RBI. Monistere also pitched in the first game of the twinbill, throwing two scoreless innings.
The Golden Eagles have played 13 games that have been decided by two runs or less this season and are 8-5 in those contests. The team is 5-4 in one run games and 3-1 in two-run games. Since the start of the 2010 season under Scott Berry, the Golden Eagles are 181-121 in games decided by two runs or less, including 111-76 in one-run games. Eight of the last 13 games have been decided by two runs or less.
After the Alabama contest, Southern Miss returns home for a weekend league series with James Madison. The first game is set for Friday at 6 p.m.
