HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team opens a stretch of six of the next seven games played at home, starting with a three-game set with Dallas Baptist this weekend at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
Single games will take place at 6 p.m., Friday, 2 p.m., Saturday and 1 p.m., Sunday, with all three games available on ESPN+. The games can also be heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
After playing their first road tilt earlier this week against Mississippi State in Pearl, the Golden Eagles return home this weekend to start a stretch that also sees them taking on Valparaiso at home next weekend with the only road tilt during this stretch a midweek matchup at Ole Miss next Tuesday. Southern Miss opens the with 13 of the first 15 games being played at home.
Â
Southern Miss (5-3) looks to snap a two-game losing streak, after falling to Mississippi State 10-9 at Trustmark Park. The Golden Eagles gave up a three-run lead in the bottom of the eighth as the Bulldogs collected four runs in the frame in the come-from-behind win.
Â
That loss marked only the 22nd time in Scott Berry's tenure that the squad dropped a game with a lead after the seventh inning. Southern Miss was 38-2 last season when leading after seven innings and the last time they fell in a game leading in the seventh was a 10-6 loss at UAB on April 29, 2022.
Â
DBU comes to Hattiesburg with a 7-1 record, dropping their first game of the season during the midweek, Tuesday, in a 4-1, 12-inning loss at home to TCU. DBU hits the road for the first time in 2023 after opening the season with three wins over Fordham, a midweek win over UT Arlington and three-game sweep of Austin Peay last weekend.
Â
The Golden Eagles were swept in a three-game series at DBU last season, March 12-13. It was the first time since the final weekend of the 2016 regular season at FIU that the program was swept in a three-game set. After the opening day was postponed due to cold weather, the visitors dropped a pair of one-run games, 3-1 and 2-0, before losing the getaway game on Sunday, 10-4.
Â
Leading the way during the early going is junior Dustin Dickerson, who currently has the best hitting streak on the club - which is also longer than anyone else this season during the early portion of the season - at six games. During the stretch, Dickerson is hitting .391 over this stretch (9-for-23) with four doubles, a triple, with eight runs and four RBI. Both Slade Wilks and Matthew Etzel had five game streaks during the early portion of the season.
