SAN MARCOS, Texas – Levi Wells pitched six innings and Texas State jumped out to an early advantage to hold off Southern Miss 3-2 Saturday afternoon in Sun Belt Conference play at Bobcat Ballpark.
The Golden Eagles (12-6, 1-1 Sun Belt) had a four-game winning streak snapped, while Texas State improved to 12-6, 1-1. The deciding game of the series takes place at 1 p.m., Sunday.
It was Southern Miss, though, that jumped out in front with a solo run in the opening frame. Matthew Etzel, who led the Golden Eagles with three of their 10 hits, and Dustin Dickerson each singled to open the game. After two strikeouts, the Golden Eagles pulled off a double steal that allowed Etzel to score from third and give him his team-leading eighth stolen base for the season.
Golden Eagle starter Matt Adams responded by getting the first two Bobcats out in their half of the first, before giving up three-straight doubles with the last two by August Ramirez and Chase Mora each driving in a run and giving Texas State a 2-1 advantage.
The Bobcats added another run in the third with a sacrifice fly by Kameron Weil, but kept the Golden Eagles on their toes for much of the game as they left 13 runners stranded, including the bases loaded in each of the first three innings.
Despite suffering the loss, Adams went five innings after a tough first inning that saw him allow three runs on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts to fall to 2-1.
Southern Miss did get solid relief pitching from Colby Allen, throwing 1 2/3 innings, and Tyler Martin, who tossed the final 1 1/3, as they combined to give up just two hits with six strikeouts.
Wells went six innings for the Bobcats allowing two runs on seven hits with no walks and 10 strikeouts to earn the win and improve to 4-0.
The only other inning Wells gave up a run was in the fourth. After Christopher Sargent doubled with one out in the fourth, Danny Lynch followed with a single to right to drive in Sargent.
The Golden Eagles also got a leadoff single by Tate Parker to open the sixth and Reece Ewing followed with a double, but Wells worked out of the jam with a strikeout and two flyouts.
Jack Stroud, who came in for Wells to open the seventh, gave up a single to Blake Johnson with one out in the ninth and Etzel added an opposite-field double to put runners in scoring position with two outs. Texas State went to the bullpen again for Triston Dixon, who got Dickerson to flyout to center on his first pitch and get his fourth save.
