HAMMOND, La. – Southern Miss homered three times and got strong pitching in an 8-1 midweek road victory over Southeastern Louisiana Tuesday night at Alumni Field.
The Golden Eagles (11-5) won for the third-straight time as they open their inaugural season of Sun Belt Conference this weekend at Texas State. SLU fell to 11-6.
Tate Parker led the way with three hits and three RBI for the visitors, but it was Slade Wilks that helped the Golden Eagles jump out early in the contest.
Wilks opened the game's scoring with a RBI double in the first, scoring Dustin Dickerson who singled. The junior designated hitter then homered to right in the third, a solo shot for his team leading fourth of the year.
Southern Miss then added three more runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to account for their other runs.
Danny Lynch and Creek Robertson collected back-to-back homers to start the sixth. It was Lynch's third and Robertson's first collegiate blast as the Golden Eagles hit consecutive homers for the first time since at Middle Tennessee of May 20 last year. It also marked the first time that the Eagles hit three home runs since June 4, 2022, against LSU. Parker finished the inning with an RBI single.
The Golden Eagles completed their scoring in the seventh on a RBI single from Dickerson and a two-run single from Tate Parker.
USM starter Billy Oldham, in his second career Golden Eagle start, gave up a run – a fielder's choice RBI by TJ Salvaggio in the fourth – on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts to earn the victory and improve to 2-0. Kros Sivley then followed with three shutout innings, including three strikeouts, and Justin Storm threw a scoreless ninth. Storm walked and hit a batter in the ninth but fanned three to end the game.
Golden Eagle pitching ended the night with 11 strikeouts.
