PEARL, Miss. – Mississippi State rallied for four runs in the bottom of the eighth to defeat Southern Miss 10-9 Tuesday night at Trustmark Park in front of an announced crowd of 6,542.
The Golden Eagles (5-3) lost for the second-straight time as the Bulldogs improved 6-3 on the year. Southern Miss also fell to 19-17 all-time in games they have played at Trustmark Park.
Southern Miss led 9-6 heading into the bottom of the eighth. Justin Storm, who had limited the Bulldogs to just one base runner since two outs in the fifth when he entered the game, gave up a double to Lane Forsythe to open the frame. After a hit batter and a walk, Southern Miss went to the bullpen for the fourth time in JB Middleton.
Middleton opened his appearance with a run-scoring wild pitch, before Dakota Johnson posted a sacrifice fly to make the score 9-8. A hit by pitch then followed by a game-tying single by Slate Alford, before Hunter Hines put the designated home squad up for good with a sacrifice fly.
The Golden Eagles got a one-out double from Blake Johnson in the ninth, but winning pitcher Nate Dohm got the final two batters to end the game.
Southern Miss opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the second. Rodrigo Montenegro started things with a single. After an out, Danny Lynch was hit by a pitch and Creek Robertson reached via a walk to load the bases, before Matthew Etzel then hit a ball to first base that was thrown wildly to second to allow a pair of runs to score on the play to give the Golden Eagles the early lead.
The Bulldogs, though, took the lead in the bottom of the frame with five runs.
After an out, Tyler Martin gave up a pair of walks and a single to load the bases. Southern Miss then went to the bullpen for Nick Monistere. The freshman right-hander allowed a bases-loaded walk and a base-clearing triple to make the score 4-2. Dakota Jordan then singled to finish the Bulldogs their five-run frame.
Southern Miss then cut into the MSU lead with a two-run double from Dustin Dickerson in the fourth, before adding four more tallies in the fifth to retake the lead 8-4. Montenegro drove in the first run with a double and later scored when Lynch reached on an error. Robertson then drove home a run with a double before Matthew Etzel reached on a error the plated the final tally of inning.
A Christopher Sargent sacrifice fly gave the Golden Eagles their final run.
Dohm gave up an unearned run and one hit with a walk and four strikeouts over the final 2 1/3 innings to get the victory and improve to 1-1. Middleton allowed a run on a hit to suffer the loss and fall to 0-1.
The Golden Eagles return home this weekend when they take on Dallas Baptist in a three-game series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. The series opens with a Friday 6 p.m. contest.
