HATTIESBURG, Miss. – A strong final day propelled the Southern Miss men's golf team to a fourth-place finish in the Hal Williams Collegiate Tuesday afternoon in Mobile, Ala.
The Golden Eagles ended with a pair of four-under, 280 rounds to finish with an eight-under 844 stroke total.
No. 5 ranked Illinois finished the 54-hole event at the par 71, 7,148-yard Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course with a 36-under 816, followed by Arkansas at 23-under 829 and No. 21 Kansas State at 13-under 839, followed by the Golden Eagles and Oral Roberts (847), who rounded out the Top 5 in the 15-team event.
"I am very proud of the team effort our guys posted this week," said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "If there were ever a team effort in our sport, this was it. The final round was played in very windy conditions. Our guys handled the tougher conditions well with good speed on the greens and exceptional ball striking."
Graduate transfer Cameron Clarke (Pittsboro, Miss.) ended the tournament with a pair of 68s to post a 208 final score to place tied for ninth in the individual standings.
"Hats off to Clarke for leading the way this week," said Brescher. "He made an adjustment with ball position in the practice round and it paid dividends with his irons this week."
Following Clarke in the scoring for the Golden Eagles, junior Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand) posted a 74 and a 69 for an even-par 213 to end his tournament tied for 25th.
Both sophomore Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) and junior Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) tied for 34th in the field. Dupuy, who was the only Golden Eagle to finish both of his first two rounds
Monday before darkness suspended play, finished with round of 72 while Latter added a 68 and 71 with both players ending with a 215 total.
Junior Bennett Ruby (Waterloo, Ontario) rounded out the Golden Eagle scoring with a 72 and 75 for a 50th-place tie and a 218-stroke total.
The Golden Eagles return to action Feb. 20-21 at the Bayou City Collegiate in Houston, Texas.
