HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men's golf team returns to action Monday and Tuesday as they travel to Houston, Texas, to play in the Bayou City Collegiate Classic at the par 72, 7,184-yard Westwood Golf Club.
The tournament will run with 36 continuous holes on Monday, starting at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start, with the final circuit played Tuesday.
Along with the Golden Eagles, the tournament field includes host Rice, Houston, Sam Houston, Abilene Christian, Houston Christian, Incarnate Word, Lamar, Louisiana, ULM, Oral Roberts, Southern Illinois, Stephen F. Austin, UT-Arlington, UTRGV and UTSA.
"Westwood Golf Club is such a great golf course," said Southern Miss men's golf coach Eddie Brescher. "Everything is in great shape, especially the greens, which are running at a speed of 11. The first day is calling for wind, which will provide some defense to this course along with tucked pin locations."
Southern Miss utilizes the same lineup as they did last week at the Hall Williams Collegiate, which includes graduate transfer Cameron Clarke (Pittsboro, Miss.), sophomore Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) and juniors Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok,Thailand), Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) and Bennett Ruby (Waterloo, Ontario). The group finished fourth, behind a pair of ranked teams in Illinois and Kansas State.
The Golden Eagles are ranked in the Top 50 themselves again this week and enter as the highest ranked team in this event by GolfStat.com at No. 49.
"Being the top ranked team in the field is nice but we are playing with the mindset that everyone is out to get us," said Brescher. "Staying humble and taking it one shot at a time will be how we approach this week."
Pairings will have a different feel this week than the normal collegiate tournament.
"Our pairings are a little different (for this week)," said Brescher. "We will have two teammates paired together for the first two rounds. I am a fan of that pairing style. Our guys are such close friends, they can feed off each other, especially if someone gets a hot round going."
