LAST TIME OUT
Southern Miss extended its season-opening win streak to seven games after a thrilling 61-59 win over No. 19/20 Ole Miss. The game marked the Lady Eagles' first win over an AP Top-25 program since the 1999-00 season and first under Joye Lee-McNelis.
Domonique Davis (DeRidder, La.) stole the show with an immaculate 25-point, five assist performance. Davis earned Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week honors as well as national attention for her part in upsetting the Rebels. Her biggest shot of the day came with 15 seconds left in the game via an acrobatic driving layup to ice the game in favor of the Lady Eagles.
Ole Miss had the ball last down two but Nyla Jean (Tampa, Fla.) swiped the ball away from the Rebels to former Rebel Jacorriah Bracey (Drew, Miss.) for the cherry on top of the historic day. Morgan Sieper (Tampa, Fla.) hit four threes on the day with multiple coming at the buzzer and Melyia Grayson (Hattiesburg, Miss.) paced both teams on the boards with nine.
KEY STORYLINES
The Lady Eagles (7-0, 0-0 Sun Belt) have captured the hearts of the nation—well at least two hearts of AP Poll voters. Southern Miss is receiving votes in the AP and Coaches Polls for the first time since 1996 and has moved into the top 10 of the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll.
Domonique Davis continues her climb up the history books, sitting with 1,096 points in the Black & Gold and ranking 21st in Southern Miss history.
Joye Lee-McNelis is off to her best start at Southern Miss and her career, owning an unblemished 7-0 record. The streak is the program's longest since the 2016-17 team won nine-straight in C-USA play. McNelis' best streak lasted 13 games and the all-time record for longest win streak is 20-consecutive games set in 1988-89.
Southern Miss' win over Ole Miss broke a streak of 23-straight losses to ranked opponents and a 15-game skid under McNelis. Southern Miss is now 18-58 against ranked teams and 1-15 under McNelis.
McNelis returns to the Elma Roane Fieldhouse for the first time in over 10 years. In 13 seasons, she held a 229-156 record as the head coach of the Tigers and guided the program to four NCAA Tournaments, three WNITs berths and five conference championships. She holds a 140-60 record at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse (136-55 at Memphis and 4-5 at Southern Miss).
SCOUTING MEMPHIS
The Tigers (3-6, 0-0 American) are looking for a true breakthrough in the 2023-24 season. Under first-year head coach Alex Simmons, Memphis has experiences the highest of highs and lowest of lows. In the past week, the Tigers have rolled Troy 100-88 and lost to Columbia 76-66.
Memphis is still finding its footing and has improved each game—whether or not the box score reflects it. The Tigers are undefeated (2-0) in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse this season.
Madison Griggs, the greatest three-point shooter in program history, leads the Tigers with 16.6 points per game, hitting 41.1 percent of her shots from the floor and 38.7 percent from beyond the arc. She has made 29 long balls in nine games so far.
Serving as Griggs' wingman is Kai Carter, who is averaging 13.1 points per contest. As a team, the Tigers are shooting 38.0 percent overall but allowing opponents to shoot 42.3 percent.
