HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- After starting the day tied for second, the Southern Miss women's golf team captured a second-place finish at The Judson. Merche Corbacho was the low Golden Eagle this week at Hattiesburg Country Club as the senior finished in fourth place.
"While it's disappointing to be in contention and not close it out, this one stings a bit more for it being at home," said head coach Lucy Nunn Burke. "We did too many good things in the first round and unfortunately we let too much get to us over the final two rounds to close it out. This is a stubborn group, so it'll take some time for it to sink in, but we are going to be better come May. I'm really excited for Merche to put a great finish together and to get a top-five finish at home. There is a lot to look forward to in the Spring, but we've got a lot of work to do."
Corbacho's 216 was a career-low as the senior fired three even-par 72s to finish out her last competitive round at her home course. Momoka Ando worked her way into the top 10 after an even-par round -- her lowest of the week. Sophomore Taylor Trible enjoyed a one-under 71 to claim a top-10 finish as she joined Ando in a tie for ninth.
Elena Melich slid down the leaderboard after a four-over 76 to close out the week and finished in a tie for 13th. Freshman Ragini Navet had a seven-over 79 during Tuesday's final round and finished in tie for 22nd. Alma Betoret finished in a tie for 30th after a nine-over 81 in the final round.
Playing as individual Fernanda Gorostiaga finished in a tie for 27th after a seven-over 29 and Jacee Fields finished tied for 50th after a nine-over 81. Corbacho was the other individual playing for the Golden Eagles.
Central Arkansas won the event by four strokes. Southern Miss, Cincinnati, Tarleton State and Drake rounded out the top five. Lou Deltombe of Tarleton State took home the individual title after shooting a three-under 213 for the week.
The Judson was final tournament on Southern Miss' Fall schedule and they will return to action on Feb. 19 at The Great River Cup match play event in Gulfport.
