Women’s Basketball Falls in Overtime Thriller to Texas State

SAN MARCOS, Texas – A 17-9 first quarter deficit haunted Southern Miss as the Lady Eagles were able to force overtime but ultimately fell 62-52 to a tough Texas State team. Southern Miss committed a season-high 28 turnovers and now sits tied for second in Sun Belt play.
"I thought our effort was very solid," said Lady Eagle head coach, Joye Lee-McNeils. "We got off to a bad start and had trouble with turnovers and bad shots early. We committed 28 turnovers—you should get beat by 30 when that happens—but our players are playing hard right now. Lani Cornfield gave us everything tonight. It might not all show up on the box score, but she was our difference maker tonight."
Tale of the Tape
Southern Miss (14-7, 7-3 Sun Belt) could not shake off its poor opening performance, scoring just nine points in the first quarter. The Lady Eagles squad could not score until the 7:03 mark and were 0-of-5 from the field prior.
Domonique Davis (DeRidder, La. // LSU) broke through for Southern Miss but the team would not score again until the 2:44 mark.
The Lady Eagles won the second quarter 15-10 but lost Davis for the rest of the game to an apparent injury. Femi Funeus (Plantation, Fla. // Seton Hall) scored six points in the frame to pace both squads.
Southern Miss entered halftime down 27-24, closing Texas State's 13-point lead and nipping the Bobcats' heels the remainder of regulation.
Lani Cornfield poured in six points in the third quarter and five in the fourth to propel the Lady Eagles to a tied game at the end of regulation. The Gowanda, N.Y. native finished the day with 14 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals.
In the end, Southern Miss ran out of steam to keep up with Texas State in overtime, getting outscored 14-4 in extra minutes.
28 Lady Eagle turnovers marks the most of the season.
