HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss women's basketball falls at home and for the second time in two games in a 65-55 decision to Old Dominion. The Lady Eagles shot 40 percent from the field but were still outpaced by the Monarch's 50 percent performance.
Tale of the Tape
The Lady Eagles fell to 14-8 and 7-4 in Sun Belt play after a turnover-filled night. Southern Miss scored the first four points of the game thanks to Domonique Davis (DeRidder, La. // LSU) and Rose Warren (Puckett, Miss. // Puckett HS) each grabbing a basket.
Old Dominion (15-9, 7-4 Sun Belt) then rattled off the next eight points of the day, to take an 8-4 lead at the first media time out. Southern Miss trailed 16-10 in the first quarter after a 4-of-12 shooting performance to ODU's 7-of-12 mark.
Davis and the Lady Eagles flipped the script in the second frame. Davis scored six of her 15 points within the second ten minutes while also grabbing two steals. Southern Miss tied things up with two Lani Cornfield (Gowanda, N.Y. / Northwest Florida State) free throws.
The Black & Gold outshot the Monarchs 44 percent to 42.3 percent but Old Dominion drilled four long balls in the first half.
Jacorriah Bracey (Drew, Miss. / Ole Miss) grabbed a 29-28 lead two minutes into the third frame which proved to be the Lady Eagles' last. ODU lead 46-39 going into the final quarter.
The Lady Eagles were able to chip away at the Monarch's lead, getting as close as eight points but the visitors always responded. Old Dominion held on to a 10-point margin and finished the game.
Davis led the Lady Eagles with 15 points and seven rebounds with Femi Funeus (Plantation, Fla. // Seton Hall) finishing second in both categories with 14 points and six boards.
The 55-point performance is the 12th time this season the Lady Eagles have finished with fewer than 60 points. Southern Miss is now 5-7 in such games and has not scored more than 60 since Jan. 19.
