
Southern Miss Cross Country Places Sixth in North Alabama Showcase; Wawrzyniak Posts School-Record Showing

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Oliwia Wawrzyniak (Poznan, Poland) posted a school-record 16:50.33 to place eighth in leading Southern Miss cross country in the 5000-meter run at the North Alabama Showcase at Joe Hunt Park in Huntsville, Ala., Friday morning.
Wawrzyniak helped the Golden Eagles finish sixth overall among the 39-team field, as they followed winner Alabama (73 points), along with Kentucky (78), Georgia Tech (110), Auburn (125) and Kennesaw State (189). Southern Miss posted 196 points in the event.
"Our ladies ran great today as we competed against some of the best teams in the country and region today," said head cross country coach Nick Gibson. "We had a lot of personal bests and we were proud of Oliwia for setting a new school record."
Along with the school-record showing by Wawrzyniak, the group of Isabella Ross (Oak Creek, Wis.), Erin Phelps (Tallahassee, Fla.), Carlin Beal (Mandeville, La.), Smilla Kolbe (Wedemark, Germany) and Rees Van Voorhis (McKinney, Texas) all produced personal bests in the event.
Ross captured a time of 17:19.18 for 23rd place, while Phelps added a 17:35.93 for a 32nd-place showing. Beal posted an 18:06.03 to come in 59th-place, while Kolbe posted a 18:19.41 for 81st.
Katelyn Cartwright (Hernando, Miss.) added a time of 18:28.08 for a 99th-place, while Van Voorhis put together a time of 18:30.58 for 105th, while Sarah Parnell (Auburn, Ala.) rounded out the Golden Eagle runners with a 18:40.35 and a 127th-place showing.
The Golden Eagles return to action Friday, Sept. 30, at the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Ark.
