HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Christopher Sargent tied a school record by hitting three of six Golden Eagle home runs collected Sunday as No. 14 Southern Miss defeated UTSA 9-5 at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field to collect a Conference USA series victory.
The Golden Eagles (38-14 overall, 20-7 C-USA) captured 20 league games for the sixth-straight season.
Five different Southern Miss players registered multiple hits in the 12-hit contest, including three from Sargent and two each from Dustin Dickerson, Reece Ewing, Slade Wilks and Blake Johnson.
After falling behind in the top of the first on a two-run homer by Ryan Flores, his 10th of the year, the Golden Eagles rallied for three runs in the bottom half of the frame. After an out, Dustin Dickerson singled. Reece Ewing then doubled into the right center gap to score Dickerson from first before Sargent belted his first home run of the day to give the home squad the early 3-2 advantage.
UTSA (33-18, 17-10) regained the lead with three more runs in the third off Southern Miss starter Hurston Waldrep as they registered four hits including an RBI single from Shane Sirdashney and a two-run single from Chase Keng.
Following the third inning, the Golden Eagles went to the bullpen in relief of Waldrep after he allowed five runs on seven hits over three innings with six strikeouts.
The Golden Eagles again tied the game in their half of the inning as Sargent and Wilks belted homers in consecutive at bats to the score at 5-5. It was the second time this season that the duo hit back-to-back homers in a game. The other came at WKU earlier this season.
Southern Miss then took the lead for good with two more runs in the fourth on Ewing's ninth homer of the year. The final two runs for the Golden Eagles also came via a home run as Sargent finished his day with his third homer and 18th of the year in the seventh and Carson Paetow added a solo shot, his 12th, to open the eighth. Paetow homered in each game of the series and the six home runs were the most by Southern Miss since they equaled that amount at Ole Miss on June 7, 2021.
Justin Storm, the third of five Golden Eagle pitchers, recorded the victory by fanning two over 1 2/3 innings and getting a big double play to get out of one inning and also added two strikeouts to up his record to 2-0.
Landon Harper entered in the eighth with two runners on after Garrett Ramsey was hit in the leg with a batted ball and had to leave the game. Harper got consecutive strikeouts and a flyout to end the threat and then retired the Roadrunners in order in the ninth to garner his 10th save. He is the first Golden Eagle to register 10 or more saves in a season since Nick Sandlin collected 12 in 2016.
UTSA reliever Luke Malone (7-3) suffered the loss by allowing five runs on seven hits and a walk with a strikeout over 6 2/3 innings.
The Golden Eagles complete the regular season next Thursday-Saturday when they travel to Murfreesboro to face Middle Tennessee in the final C-USA series of the year.
