MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Conference USA regular season title is within reach for the No. 17 Southern Miss baseball team as they take on Middle Tennessee in its final series of the year for the Golden Eagles.
Southern Miss (38-14 overall, 20-7 C-USA) holds a two-game lead over Louisiana Tech and are three games ahead of both Middle Tennessee and UTSA. One win over the Blue Raiders (29-21, 17-10) clinches at least a share of the league crown and at least two victories this weekend gives the Golden Eagles the title outright.
In their final season in C-USA, the Golden Eagles hold five regular season team titles, including 2003, 2011 (shared), 2013 (shared), 2017 and 2018. Four of those regular-season titles have come under current coach Scott Berry.
In the series against Middle Tennessee, Southern Miss is 30-7 overall since the two teams began playing in 1990. The school's C-USA rivalry began during the 2014 campaign and the Golden Eagles have won all seven series and enter the weekend having won 21-straight games over the Blue Raiders.
The 20 wins in league play is the ninth time that they have done that since joining the league in 1996 and have done it in each of the last six season. Over its time in C-USA, the Golden Eagles are 450-254 (.639) in league games and are 150-79-5 in league series.
After dropping two straight series to UAB and Old Dominion, Southern Miss rallied last weekend to take two of three games from UTSA and put them in position to possibly win the league title. In the series finale, Christopher Sargent hit three of a season-high six home runs for the Golden Eagles.
Sargent holds the team lead in homers (18) and RBI (50), while Dustin Dickerson holds the team lead in batting average at .343. His 22 doubles also rank No. 7 in the country. Reece Ewing, who returned to the lineup after missing nine games with a hand injury, hits .303 after going 2-for-7 in his return with seven walks and a hit by pitch. He doubled and homered with three RBI in the series finale with UTSA.
The Golden Eagles will continue with their all-right-handed rotation of Tanner Hall (7-2, 2.60 ERA), Hunter Riggins (6-4, 3.28 ERA) and Hurtson Waldrep (5-1, 3.10 ERA).
Following the Middle Tennessee series, the Golden Eagles open the C-USA Tournament starting Wednesday, May 25, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
