HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Sophomore Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) finished fourth and senior Brice Wilkinson (Madison, Miss.) placed sixth to help Southern Miss to a fourth-place team showing Monday in the Tiger Invitational by Jason Dufner.
The Golden Eagles were supposed to finish 54 holes stretched over three days at the par 72, 7,289-yard course played at the Robert Trent Jones Trail at the Grand National Lake course in Opelika, Ala., but expected bad weather forced the teams to condense play into a two-day schedule.
After shooting an even par 72 in the opening round on Sunday, Robbie Latter completed the second round Monday with a 68 and then followed that a 69 to post a seven-under 209 total. It was Latter's second top five finish of his Golden Eagle career, and he now has 13 of his 21 rounds of par or below this season. He now also has four rounds this season in the 60s.
"I am proud of our team this week," said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "It was a good team effort by all our boys. Our team played some solid golf overall. Anytime you have two guys in the top six, you are bound to have a good week as a team. Hats off to Robbie and Brice. They stepped up when we needed them most and it paid dividends for us as a program."
Wilkinson shot three-straight rounds of 71 to end his event with a three-under 213, collecting his second top 10 showing of the season. He now has 10 of 18 rounds of par or better this season.
Senior Hunter Atkins (West Point, Miss.) added a 34th-place tie after shooting a pair of 75s to finish his tournament with a 220, while sophomore Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand) added a pair of 74s to end with a 222 and a 46th-place tie. Freshman Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) produced rounds of 77 and 75 to complete the team individual scorers with a 225 and a 66th-place tie.
Sophomore Warwick Purchase (Pretoria, South Africa) competed as an individual and he collected a 70 and a 72 after shooting a 79 in his opening round to finish tied for 39th in the individual standings.
Florida Gulf Coast won the event with a 32-under 832, while Auburn finished second at a 19-under 845 and the Auburn B squad came in ahead of the Golden Eagles by a stroke at two-under 862. Southern Miss, which entered play with a No. 77 national ranking, finished with an 863 total, besting Top 100 schools Missouri, Lamar and South Alabama in the 16-team field.
"We picked up some quality wins on this field with our performance," said Brescher. "That is two-straight tournaments we have picked up wins over top fifty ranked opponents and we still haven't displayed our A game. Once we get a few things sorted and tighten up some mistakes we are making, we will see a difference on the scoreboard. We have some more opportunities coming up and we look to take advantage of those opportunities and make a push for the NCAA postseason."
The Golden Eagles return to action when they travel to Phoenix, Ariz., to compete in the Grand Canyon University Invitational, March 14-15.
