HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men's golf team heads West for their next tournament as they play Monday and Tuesday in the 54-hole Grand Canyon University Invitational being played at the GCU Championship Course in Phoenix, Ariz.
This will be the second consecutive year that the Golden Eagles will play in this event, placing second among 16 teams a year ago.
Heading into the tournament, Southern Miss holds the second-highest national ranking of No. 75 as rated by Golfstat, behind only No. 62 TCU in this tournament, in the 23-team field. Also included in the field are host Grand Canyon, UT-Arlington, Fresno State, Sacramento State, Valparaiso, North Dakota State, Ball State, Abilene Christian, Creighton, Eastern Michigan, Pacific, Cal-State Fullerton, Drake, UMKC, Northern Colorado, Columbia, Incarnate Word, UTRGV, Hawai'i, Omaha and Northeast California Baptist.
"We scheduled this tournament for many reasons," said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "We know this is a great golf course with fantastic weather. But anytime you have a chance to compete in a large field of 23 teams, that is a great opportunity to pick up many wins. Fields this size are rare, but it is a great opportunity to pick up wins against teams we rarely see and that will help us in the long run."
The Golden Eagles will field the same lineup it did last week against a strong field at the Tiger Invitational by Jason Dufner, hosted by Auburn in Opelika, Ala, in which they finished fourth. That lineup consists of senior Brice Wilkinson (Madison, Miss.), senior Hunter Atkins (West Point, Miss.), sophomore Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario), sophomore Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand) and freshman Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.).
Atkins, who is third on the team in strokes per round at 72.29, finished fourth in this event last year.
The duo of Latter and Rattanayanon continue to lead the team in strokes per round as the pair have posted scores of 71.52 and 71.76, respectively.
This group looks to vie for another strong run in this event and a possible team crown.
"Last year we made a final round charge and almost won this tournament," said Brescher. "Being one of the favorites to win is nice but nothing in golf is guaranteed. We will focus on executing each shot we face and see where we stack up at the end of three rounds."
