HATTISBURG, Miss. – Senior Hunter Atkins (West Point, Miss.) shot a three-under 68 and senior Brice Wilkinson (Madison, Miss.) added an even par 71 over the final 18 holes to help Southern Miss tie for fifth in the final team standings at the Grand Canyon University Invitational, Tuesday, in Phoenix, Ariz.
The Golden Eagles completed the second round, which was suspended yesterday due to darkness, and then went through the final 18 holes today to post an 845-team total, just 11 strokes behind team champion and host Grand Canyon (834) at the par 71 GCU Championship Golf Course. Fresno State (838) finished second among the field, followed by UT Arlington (839), TCU (843) while ending tied with Sacramento State.
"Hats off to our seniors Hunter and Brice for leading the boys this week," Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "Having four guys in the top 27 is a nice bonus as well."
Atkins (70-72-68) and Wilkinson (72-67-71) each finished tied for 10th as they ended the 54-hole event with a 210-stroke total.
Both sophomore Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) and freshman Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) each tied for 27th at 213, after the duo shot 73 and 75, respectively, over the final circuit. Latter added totals of 68 and 72 over the opening two rounds, while Dupuy posted a 68 and a 70.
Sophomore Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand) finished in a 72nd-place tie with rounds of 74, 71 and 75 for a 220 total.
"This is not a finish we are happy with," said Brescher. "Our team is going to use this as fuel on the competitive fire for our next event. We played the back nine holes very well this week, lead the field in birdies and par 4 scoring. However, we made too many mistakes on the front nine that cost us."
The Golden Eagles finished with 59 birdies and a 4.01 average score on par 4 holes.
Southern Miss returns to action next Monday and Tuesday when they travel to Greenville, N.C., for the ECU Invitational.
