HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Conference USA baseball play gets underway this weekend and Southern Miss opens its 26th league campaign at home when they entertain Florida Atlantic in a three-game set.
Game times for the series are 6 p.m. (Friday), 2 p.m. (Saturday) and 10:30 a.m. (Sunday) with all three games available on the Southern Miss Sports Network as well as streamed via ESPN+.
The Golden Eagles (11-6) enter the weekend with a 3-2 Wednesday win over Alabama in their only midweek contest, snapping a three-game losing streak in the process.
Florida Atlantic comes to Hattiesburg with a 13-5 record having had a seven-game winning streak snapped with a 12-3 Tuesday home loss to North Dakota State. This will be the Owls first trip out of the state of Florida this season, as they have played just one road tilt back on Feb. 23 at Miami. They lost that contest, 9-1.
In the last meeting between the two teams, they split a pair of games in Boca Raton last May. Southern Miss holds a 14-11 overall advantage in the series, dating back to the 2014 campaign, and includes a pair of triumphs over the Owls in the 2018 and 2019 C-USA Tournament championship games.
Offensively, the Golden Eagles are currently led by Reece Ewing who is hitting .328 with a team-best four home runs and 11 RBI. Slade Wilks ranks next at .316 and 10 RBI, while Dustin Dickerson holds a .302 batting average.
With his two runs driven in against Alabama, Will McGillis possesses a team-high 13 RBI.
On the mound this weekend, the Golden Eagles will open with Tanner Hall (2-0, 0.84 ERA), who makes his first C-USA start, after getting midweek wins over Mississippi State and Tulane earlier this season. Hunter Riggins (3-1, 0.69 ERA) gets the call in the middle game and Hurston Waldrep (1-1, 3.86 ERA) will start on Sunday for Southern Miss.
Following this weekend's games, the Golden Eagles will hit the road next week for four contests. They will play at New Orleans, Tuesday, in a 6:30 p.m., and then travel to WKU for a weekend league series.
