HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team concludes its seven-game, season-opening homestand this weekend when they welcome Jacksonville State to Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field for a three-game series.
Game times are set for 6 p.m., Friday, 2 p.m., Saturday, and 1 p.m., this Sunday. The highlight of the weekend comes Saturday afternoon with the team's Parrothead game. The Golden Eagles plan to wear Jimmy Buffet-inspired jerseys during that contest.
Southern Miss also looks to rebound from its 6-5, 13-inning midweek loss to South Alabama after opening the season with a three-game sweep of North Alabama, outscoring the Lions 29-5.
The Gamecocks come to Hattiesburg having dropped all four of their games to open the season. JSU fell to Kentucky three times last weekend and dropped a 6-3 decision at Alabama on Tuesday.
After playing in Jacksonville, Ala., last season in which the Golden Eagles took two of three games, the teams will spar in Hattiesburg for the first time this weekend. Both the Golden Eagles and Gamecocks only other meetings came during the 2006 and 2010 NCAA Regionals with Southern Miss winning both of those affairs.
The Golden Eagles, which got wins from its three starting pitchers last weekend, will once again utilize the same rotation with the right-hander trio of Ben Ethridge (1-0, 0.00 ERA), Hunter Riggins (1-0, 0.00 ERA) and Hurston Waldrep (1-0, 1.69 ERA) getting the call each day this weekend.
Junior outfielder Reece Ewing (Mobile, Ala.) leads the way for the Golden Eagles offensively this season, having had two hits in each of the first four games to lead the squad with a .500 batting average. Ewing, along with Christopher Sargent, have a home run to lead the team. Both came Tuesday against South Alabama.
Following the weekend series, Southern Miss returns to action next Wednesday, March 2, when they play Mississippi State at Trustmark Park in Pearl. The Golden Eagles are the designated home team.
