HATTIESBURG, Miss. --Â The Southern Miss men's basketball team rallied on Thursday night in Hattiesburg to force overtime against UTSA after trailing in the final seconds, but the Roadrunners scored 22 points in the extra frame to ultimately win, 98-79.Â
Junior Tyler Stevenson poured in 19 points and 12 rebounds, but it was his put-back layup that sent the Golden Eagles (6-19, 1-11 C-USA) to overtime for the first time since beating UTEP in Reed Green Coliseum on Jan. 1, 2020. The play started with DeAndre Pinckney securing a defensive rebound and pushing the ball up to Stevenson on an outlet pass, then Stevenson missed a pair of layups before the final attempt fell at the buzzer.Â
The Roadrunners (9-18, 2-12) scored the first 12 points of overtime before sophomore Walyn Napper ended the Southern Miss scoring drought that spanned the first two-and-a-half minutes of extra time. The road team would go on to score another 10 points to ultimately put the came out of reach. UTSA's Dhieu Deing led all scorers with 26 points, while Napper paced the Golden Eagles with a career-high 21 points.
Pinckney secured his second-straight double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Stevenson recorded his first since the FIU game on Feb. 3. The Golden Eagles led by as many as 11 in the first half before UTSA mounted its first comeback to head to the half tied at 38-all. Prior to that, Southern Miss jumped out to a 10-3 lead that saw junior Isaih Moore throw down a massive windmill dunk that got the Reed Green faithful on their feet and forced a UTSA timeout.
The Golden Eagles were feeding off of Moore early, who scored 11 of his 15 points in the first half. Moore's six blocked shots were the most by a Golden Eagle since Gary Flowers swatted nine against New Orleans in 2009. The Columbia, S.C. native also finished with seven rebounds. Napper added a team-high 6 assists to a long with four rebounds and two steals.Â
UTSA shot 46.9 percent from deep as part of its barrage of 15 three-pointers and it shot 46.7 percent from the floor. Southern Miss went 6-of-22 from deep and shot 43.9 percent from the floor. Southern Miss grabbed 43 rebounds compared to UTSA's 40. The Golden Eagles held the sixth-best offensive rebounding team in the country to 10 offensive boards -- UTSA was previously averaging 13.88 per game.Â
Southern Miss will face a quick turnaround as it prepares to host UTEP on Saturday, Feb. 19. Tipoff from Reed Green Coliseum is slated to 12 p.m.
