JACKSON -- Junior forward Tylik Weeks has been named a Howell Trophy finalist by The Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame & Museum. The award is presented by Pearl River Resort and the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians (MBCI). Selected by a statewide panel of media members, this year's finalists represent the best of college basketball across Mississippi's four-year institutions.
The New York, New York native averaged 19.7 points per game on the season and 20.1 points per game in league play. His total average led the league in scoring, while his conference average placed him second behind the Sun Belt Player of the Year, Chaze Harris. Weeks averaged 5.4 rebounds per game in 34 contests and averaged 5.3 rebounds in 18 conference games.
Weeks scored in double figures 32 times, including a stretch of 21-straight games. That run is the second-longest stretch by a Golden Eagle in program history, as Wendell Ladner had a stretch of 22-straight games (Dec. 7, 1968 - Dec. 1, 1969). He produced 15 20-point games and had four 30-point games. His first was a 37-point performance against North Florida at the Pensacola Invitational, then he went for 32 points against Troy on Feb. 14. In the Troy game, Weeks scored 16 consecutive points for Southern Miss and had 28 of 36 points in a stretch during the second half. Thirty of his points against the Trojans came in the second half, which made him the first player in school history to have 30 points in a single half that didn't include overtime. Weeks later scored 30-plus in back-to-back games to open the Sun Belt Tournament for Southern Miss, which propelled the Golden Eagles to a semifinal appearance.
He posted double-doubles against Ole Miss and Kent State, going for a career-high 11 rebounds in the MAC-SBC win over the Golden Flashes. Weeks shot the ball at a 47 percent clip this season, which ranked seventh in league play, and shot 82 percent from the free-throw line in league play. Weeks was named the Sun Belt Player of the Week on Nov. 25 after scoring 37 points off the bench versus North Florida and then posted 14 points and seven rebounds in the title game against UT Martin, which the Golden Eagles won
Weeks led the league in both free throws made and free throw attempts. His 19.7 points per game is the highest scoring average for Southern Miss since Bernard Haslett averaged 19.8 points per game during the 1993-94 season.
The three finalists on the men's side are Daeshun Ruffin (Jackson State), Josh Hubbard (Mississippi State), and Weeks.
The three finalists and their coaches will be recognized at a luncheon and program on Wednesday, April 15th at the Golden Moon Casino. This year's event will feature special guest Jan Sojourner, legendary Jackson Prep head coach and one of the most respected figures in Mississippi high school basketball history. Sojourner built a nationally recognized program, winning multiple state championships and mentoring generations of student-athletes throughout her career. To purchase tickets to the event, visit www.msfame.com or contact the Museum Office directly.Â
All proceeds from the event benefit the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The Howell and Gillom Trophies are a part of the Outstanding Player Awards Series, which also recognizes the top college athlete in football with the C Spire Conerly Trophy and the top college baseball player with the Ferriss Trophy presented by MBCI and Pearl River Resort.
