HATTIESBURG, Miss. --Â Despite Isaih Moore's second 25-point game in the last five days, the Southern Miss men's basketball team fell at home to UTEP (16-10, 9-5 C-USA) on Saturday afternoon, 84-70.Â
Southern Miss (6-20, 1-12 C-USA) got off to another hot start in the first half for the second consecutive game, shooting 51.9 percent from the floor, but it trailed at the break by 10. The Golden Eagles stifled the Miners' offense inside the three-point stripe, but they had no answer for UTEP's eight triples in the first half. Led by Jorell Saterfield's three three-pointers, the Miners shot 8-of-16 from deep in the first 20 minutes.Â
Mo Arnold and Moore kept it a 10-point game at the half due in large part to Arnold's perfect shooting performance. The first-year Golden Eagle went 5-of-5 from the floor in the first half for 10 points. Moore threw down another monster alleyoop to go along with 12 first-half points. Moore would go on to finish with 25Â points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and three blocks.Â
DeAndre Pinckney cut the UTEP lead to five with 12:03 left in the game on his second three-pointer of the half, but Souley Boum knocked down a pair of jumpers to push the lead back to 10. The Golden Eagles were able to cut the deficit to five again, this time on a fastbreak basket from Moore, but the Miners answered with a 10-0 run to pull ahead by 16. It would ultimately be too much for the Golden Eagles to overcome and the UTEP lead would get as big as 19 before the final buzzer sounded with Southern Miss falling by 14.Â
Moore recorded his second double-double of the week and finished one off his career high in points. Arnold's 14 points were his most as a Golden Eagle. Pinckney added 12 points, while freshman Rashad Bolden poured in eight. Boum, who leads C-USA in scoring at 20.1 points per game, was held to 12 points on 4-of-11 shooting from the floor.Â
As a team, Southern Miss shot 54.7 percent from the floor and outrebounded UTEP by seven. The Miners finished 14-of-26 from deep and Saterfield finished with a game-high four triples.Â
The Golden Eagles will finish their homestand against Marshall on Monday, Feb. 21. Tipoff from Reed Green Coliseum is slated for 7 p.m.
