FOLEY, Ala. — The Southern Miss women's cross-country team wins its first conference title for its first appearance in the Sun Belt Conference Championships in Foley, Ala. Friday evening; four Golden Eagles notched All-Conference titles, and Oliwia Wawrzyniak is freshman of the year.
"The ladies did great today. They have been doing great all year; they got the job done. Having four in the top 15, four all-conference, and one just missing out, shows how good this team is. And you know, winning the first conference title and first Sun Belt title means a lot, and especially these girls have worked hard and have put in a lot of miles and stuff over the summer getting ready for this. This is the goal that we've talked about since last year. Whenever we knew we were moving into this conference, this was our goal, starting last year, and they trained well over summer to set themselves up for all the success they're having," said head cross country coach Nick Gibson.
"The ladies were fantastic today. They've been running well all year, and they just came in today and handled the pressure of the moment and ran great and did the same thing they've been doing all year. And, this is our first ever women's cross country title that feels great. Nick Gibson has done an amazing job with this group. He's recruited well. They have been fantastic for him, and I'm so proud of Nick and the ladies and what they've accomplished," said head track coach Jon Stuart.
The squad of Oliwia Wawrzyniak (Poznan, Poland), Isabela Ross (Oak Creek, Wis.), Erin Phelps (Tallahassee, Fla.), and Smilla Kolbe (Wedemark, Germany) grabbed All-Conference titles. Wawrzyniak and Ross for First Team All-Conference, Phelps for second, and Kolbe for third.
Seniors Katelyn Cartwright (Hernando, Miss.) and Carlin Beal (Mandeville, La.) posted personal bests.
First to cross the line for the Black and Gold was freshman Wawrzyniak with a time of 16:42.2 to place 3rd, followed by freshman Ross with 17:03.5 for 5th place to grind out their strong freshman campaign. Transfer graduate student Phelps captured 9th place with a time of 17:35.1, while freshman Kolbe added 17:40.2 to come in 11th place, followed by senior Beal, who ran a time of 17:44.4 for 16th place. Senior Cartwright added a time of 18:13.4 for 22nd place; rounding out for the Golden Eagles was Sarah Parnell (Auburn, Ala.) with a time of 18:38.3 for 36th place showing.
