Golden Eagles Finish 8th at the NCAA South Regionals for Best Program Mark with Two Top-20 Finishes

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.-- The Southern Miss women's cross country team finished 8th in the 6000-meter run at the NCAA South Regionals for the best mark in program history on Nov 11. along with freshman Isabela Ross breaking the school record.
"The ladies had a great performance today, competing against some of the best schools in the nation, and I could not be more proud of their effort. Two finishing in the top 20, a new program mark, and Izzy and Oliwia as freshmen besting the school record," said head coach Nick Gibson.
Last season the Golden Eagles finished 11th to tie the best mark in program history at the NCAA Regional, now improving their mark by three places.
The squad of Isabela Ross (Oak Creek, Wis.) Oliwia Wawrzyniak (Poznan, Poland), Erin Phelps (Tallahassee, Fla.), Katelyn Cartwright (Hernando, Miss.), Sarah Parnell (Auburn, Ala.), and Carlin Beal (Mandeville, La.) posted personal bests.
The previous school record of 20:22:50 set by Janet Rono in 2001 at the C-USA Cross Country Championships was bested by two Golden Eagles today. Wawrzyniak finished in 20:11.3 for 17th place, and Ross set a new school record of 20:03.3 for 15th. Both runners notched All-Regional titles.
Transfer student Phelps captured 41st place with a time of 20:49.3, while senior Cartwright added the time of 21:54.7 for 100th place, followed by junior Parnell, who ran a time of 22:10.4 for 120th. Senior Beal rounded out the Black & Gold with a time of 22.11.9 for a 122nd-place showing.
