HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Off to its best start since 2007, the Southern Miss Women's Tennis team looks to best that mark when Jacksonville State comes to town on Friday at 2 p.m. The Golden Eagles (9-1, 1-0 C-USA) will then continue its longest homestand of the season on Saturday when Mississippi Valley State comes to the Southern Miss Tennis Complex at 10 a.m. Admission is free.
Katia de la Garza continues to shine for the Golden Eagles, recording a team-best eighth win in last Sunday's 6-1 win over Troy. The junior took the No. 2 singles match via a 6-3, 7-5 score. The Golden Eagles also utilized wins from Sarah Medik, Ebru Zeynep Yazgan, Warisara Lee, and Tanit Lopez. Yazgan moved her record to 8-0, matching de la Garza's win total. In her freshman campaign, Medik moved her mark to 6-0 and Lopez now sits at a perfect 5-0 in her junior season.
With its 22-1 doubles record, Southern Miss has solidified itself as a team to be reckoned with in Conference USA. Backed by an 8-0 record from de la Garza and Lee at the top doubles position, the Golden Eagles have earned the ever-important doubles point in all 10 contests. Southern Miss has not dropped a doubles game since February 22 when Monique Burton and Medik fell at Northwestern State.
Jacksonville State
After dropping its opening match to West Alabama on January 25, Jacksonville State has rattled off six-straight wins. The Gamecocks defeated Alabama State in their last outing, 5-2. Cristina Moll-Alles has posted a 6-0 mark for the Gamecocks at the top singles position while Malin Buechner and Harriet Hamilton have combined for a 12-1 record at second and third singles. Historically, Southern Miss has won all five meetings between the two schools. In a 2016 meeting, the Golden Eagles cruised to a 7-0 win in Hattiesburg.
Mississippi Valley State
The Devilettes head to Hattiesburg on a five-game skid after dropping two matches at the SWAC Round-Up. In 2018, the Golden Eagles won 7-0, which is the only meeting between the two programs.
