Golden Eagles Stay Hot in 6-1 Win Over Troy

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss (9-1, 1-0 C-USA) Women's Tennis team is off to its best start since 2007 after picking up a 6-1 win against Troy (5-3, 0-0 Sun Belt) on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Eagles extended their record at the Southern Miss Tennis Complex to a perfect 7-0 mark after sweeping their three home contests this weekend.

"I am very proud of the team and the way we fought this weekend," said head coach Steve Schram. "The girls are learning to compete at a high level and fighting for every single point.

"Katy was able to have another great weekend and she defeated a very good opponent. I'm very pleased with her progress. Ebru has also stepped up this season and it's nice to see her improve from last season. We look forward to hitting the practice courts again tomorrow."

For the 10^thtime this season, Southern Miss won the doubles point to give itself an early cushion. Arina Amaning and Ebru Zeynep Yazgan grabbed an easy win after Troy had to forfeit on court three. Sarah Medik and Monique Burton secured the doubles point for the Golden Eagles after winning 6-4 on court one. Katia de la Garza and Warisara Lee needed some late magic on court two to win 7-6(4).

Tanit Lopez got the nod on court six but won by forfeit after the Trojans were unable to complete their lineup. De la Garza added her team-best eighth win of the season after winning 6-4, 7-5 on court two. Medik added a straight-set win on court three, winning 6-4, 7-5. Yazgan put together a dominant performance en route to winning 6-2, 6-0 on court four. Lee, a freshman from Thailand, recorded a 7-6(5), 6-1 win on court five. Arina Amaning fell in straight sets on court one.

The Golden Eagles will return to the courts on Friday (March 6) when they host Jacksonville State at 2 p.m.
