LAKE CHARLES, La. – The Southern Miss baseball team continues its longest road swing of the season with four games here this weekend in the Lake Area Classic, two each against Valparaiso and McNeese, at Joe Miller Ballpark.
The schedule shows the Golden Eagles playing Valpo at 2 p.m., Friday, and at 1 p.m., Saturday, while also facing McNeese at 4 p.m., Saturday, and at 1 p.m., Sunday.
Scott Berry's club enjoys a 6-2 start, tied for the second-best start under the current coach's tenure with his 2011 and 2018 squads. Close games have been the norm over the early portion of the season as five contests have been decided by one run with the Golden Eagles 4-1 in those affairs.
This weekend marks the first meeting between Valpo and the Golden Eagles in baseball, while the Cowboys and Southern Miss are tied at 3-3 games apiece in a series that dates back to the 2002 campaign.
Southern Miss enjoys a 6-3 record over the three previous trips to this tournament during the 2002, 2004 and 2014 campaigns. The Golden Eagles were a late addition in their last trip to this event. Stony Brook was supposed to open the 2014 season with the Golden Eagles in Hattiesburg, but a major snow storm in the northeast prevented the Wolves from making the trip South and the trip to Lake Charles ensued.
Four Golden Eagles lead the offensive attack this season as sophomore Will McGillis holds a team-leading .389 batting average with a team-high two homers and five RBI. Sophomore Charlie Fischer is next at .367, while sophomore Hunter LeBlanc holds a .364 mark and senior Gabe Montenegro is at .321.
Senior Matthew Guidry extended his consecutive reached base streak to 64 games at Ole Miss on Tuesday night.
The Golden Eagle pitching corps continues to throw well as they have posted a 3.75 team earned run average and have collected 85 strikeouts with only 23 walks over 72 innings. Sophomore right-hander Gabe Shepard (0-1, 3.86) will get the nod on Friday and senior righty Walker Powell (1-0, 1.29) is expected to pitch in the one Saturday's games.
The rest of the rotation for the weekend is to be determined.
Following this event, Southern Miss completes the current six-game road swing with Mississippi State next Wednesday, March 4, at Trustmark Park in Pearl. Game time is set for 6 p.m., and the Golden Eagles will be the designated visiting team.
