LAKE CHARLES, La. – Danny Lynch belted a two-run, go-ahead home run and Tyler Spring retired all 12 Valparaiso hitters he faced as Southern Miss defeated the Crusaders 5-1 Friday afternoon in the opening day of the Lake Area Classic at Joe Miller Ballpark.
The Golden Eagles (7-2) collected 10 hits including two each from Lynch, Charlie Fischer, Andrew Stanley and Dustin Dickerson.
Four Southern Miss pitchers limited the Crusaders (1-6) to just two hits but did give up six walks, including four from starter Gabe Shepard over his two-plus inning start.
With the score tied at 1-1, Matt Guidry led off the bottom of the sixth with a wind-aided double in short left-centerfield. Guidry who extended his consecutive reached base streak to 65 games, scored two batters later when Danny Lynch laced a Ryan Mintz pitch over the rightfield wall to give the Golden Eagles a 3-1 advantage.
That was enough for Golden Eagle pitchers as they retired the last 15 batters they faced, including the first 12 by Spring (1-0), who earned the win by fanning six. Hunter Stanley retired the Crusaders in order in the ninth as Southern Miss finished with 14 strikeouts from its pitching staff.
Southern Miss added two insurance runs in the eighth as Will McGillis led off the frame with a walk. After an out, Fischer singled and LeBlanc hit a grounder that was misplayed at first base to allow McGillis to score from second. Andrew Stanley then singled to center, plating the final run.
Valpo got on the board first when Shepard issued his last walk by starting the third and Troy Jones followed with a run-scoring double off reliever Sean Tweedy to give the visitors the early advantage.
The Golden Eagles then tied the game at 1-1, on a sacrifice fly by Gabe Montenegro in the bottom of the frame.
Mintz threw 6 1/3 innings for the Crusaders and allowed three runs on seven hits with a walk and three strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 0-1.
The two teams play against Saturday at 1 p.m, and the Golden Eagles will then play host McNeese at 4 p.m.
