Probable Starters for for Ole Miss game:
Tuesday, Feb. 25 – LH Drew Boyd, So. (0-0, 0.00) vs. RH Wes Burton, Fr. (1-0, 3.86)
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – For the first time in 2020, the Southern Miss baseball team takes to the road to face in-state foe Ole Miss, Tuesday, Feb. 25, in a 4 p.m. contest at Oxford-University Stadium.
The Golden Eagles are off to their best seven-game start to a campaign in three seasons with a 6-1 record. The Rebels enter play with a 6-1 record as well, as this will be the earliest date in a baseball season that the two schools have played against each other. The previously earliest date came, Feb. 27, 2002, as Southern Miss captured a 5-1 decision at Pete Taylor Park.
Ole Miss leads the overall series 82-55, but the Golden Eagles are 11-9 against the Rebels under Scott Berry, including a 5-3 decision at Pete Taylor Park in the last meeting between the schools in 2019.
During the early going, Southern Miss has been able to win close contests by capturing four one-run games over their first six wins.
A big part of that is senior Matt Guidry, who extended his consecutive game streak of reaching base to 63 as he hit safely in all four contests last week. Four other Golden Eagles are currently hitting over .300 with sophomore Charlie Fischer leading the way with a .385 batting mark, followed by junior Gabe Montenegro at .375, freshman Dustin Dickerson at .333 and sophomore Will McGillis at .308.
The team also continues to pitch well as the squad holds a 3.66 earned run average with 75 strikeouts and 22 walks over 64 innings. Senior closer Hunter Stanley leads the way with a 2-0 record and a team-high 14 strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings of work.
Golden Eagle sophomore left-hander Drew Boyd (0-0, 0.00 ERA) makes his first collegiate start for the Golden Eagles. He will face Rebel freshman right-hander Wes Burton (1-0, 3.86 ERA).
The Ole Miss game starts the longest road swing for the Golden Eagles this season of six games. Following its stop in Oxford, Southern Miss travels again this weekend to Lake Charles, La., for the Lake Area Classic which will include two games against Valparaiso and two versus host McNeese State. The swing ends next Tuesday, March 4, in Pearl against Mississippi State.
