HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Walker Powell tossed seven shutout frames and Charlie Fischer added three hits to lead Southern Miss to a 3-2 non-conference victory over Murray State Saturday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles are off to a 2-0 start after beating the Racers 6-0 on Friday in the season opener.
Powell limited the visitors to six hits over seven innings with no walks and three strikeouts to earn his first victory of the season.
Southern Miss gave its pitcher an early advantage by scoring a run in the opening frame. Gabe Montenegro was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the first. After a strikeout and a walk, Brant Blaylock grounded to third with the throw to second for a force coming late and not registering an out.
Instead, the pivot throw to first after the initial try by second baseman Jordan Holly got away at first, allowing Montenegro to score because of the miscue.
A sacrifice fly by Reed Trimble in the sixth increased the Golden Eagle lead to 2-0 and the home squad added its final tally in the eighth on a Fischer RBI single. Fischer collected three of the team's seven hits in the contest.
The Golden Eagles held the Racers (0-2) scoreless for the first 17 2/3 innings of the series, but MSU collected its first two runs in the ninth on a two-run homer by Ryan Perkins, driving in Jake Slunder.
Hunter Stanley, who threw the final two innings, threw a perfect inning in the eighth, but gave up a single to Slunder to start the ninth. He then fanned two batters before giving up the home run, before getting the final out on a grounder. It was Stanley's first save of the year.
Southern Miss goes after the sweep with a 1 p.m., contest Sunday at Pete Taylor Park.
