HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Junior Brice Wilkinson (Madison, Miss.) fired a final-round 69 to lead Southern Miss over the final day of the Mobile Sport Authority Intercollegiate Tuesday to help lead the Golden Eagles to a sixth-place tie in the team standings.
Wilkinson, who added a pair of even-par 72s on the 7,212-yard Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course the previous day, finished with a 213 overall total and a 19th-place tie.
His score helped propel the Golden Eagles to a two-under team score of 286 over the final round as they finished with a total of 860, tying them with host South Alabama.
"We met as a team heading into the final round and set a goal of posting multiple players under par and jumping into 6th place to finish," said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "Obviously, we would like to finish higher, but given the gap the top five teams had on us in seventh, we knew that gap would tough to close without any help or a lot of mistakes from those teams.
"We met our goals and finished in a solid spot. All of our guys contributed to our team score for the week, so it was a solid team effort to start the spring."
Senior Walker Kesterson (Hartsburg, Mo.) posted a one-under 71 and freshman Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) collected a 73 as both players finished the 54-hole event with a two-under 214 score as each finish tied for 27th-place.
Sophomore Joey Kirkland (West Monroe, La.) added a 73 to place tied for 55th with a 221, while senior Matt Lorenz (Fairhope, Ala.) was one stroke behind him at 222 with a final-round 74 to tie for 59th.
"We each have a few parts of our game to tighten up before our next event," Brescher said. "Some need to drive it a bit better, some need to tighten up their distance wedges. As a whole, we plan to put an emphasis on making more putts. We had a lot of burnt edges and lip outs this week that would have helped if they had fallen.
"With a few days to work before we head to Nicholls, we plan to tighten up these areas which should help us perform better going forward. We are knocking on the door and are close. We hope that door to victory will open soon."
No. 60 Florida State won the event with a 836 total team score, followed by Illinois (837), Louisville (838), UAB and Texas State (842), Southern Miss and South Alabama, Louisiana-Lafayette (862), Wofford and Illinois State (865), Denver and Richmond (867), Chattanooga (878) and WKU (881).
The Golden Eagles return to action next Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 17-18, as they play in the LaTour Collegiate at the LaTour Golf Course in Mathews, La., and hosted by Nicholls State.
