HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Junior Brice Wilkinson (Madison, Miss.) shot a final-round 68 to finish in a three-way tie for sixth place as Southern Miss posted a third-place tie in the team standings, Tuesday, at the LaTour Intercollegiate in Mathews, La.
Wilkinson shot a 54-hole tournament total of 207 at the par 72, 7,010-yard LaTour Golf Course, finishing with a pair of 68s in the event.
Abilene Christian collected a 19-under 269 over the final round to pull away with the team championship with an 820 total. They defeated Central Arkansas (833) and Southern Miss and Jacksonville State (834).
"Obviously not where we were wanting to finish on the leaderboard," said Southern Miss men's golf coach Eddie Brescher, whose team had a one-stroke advantage heading into the final round of play. "Hats off to Abilene Christian, they played some great golf in windy conditions."
Senior Walker Kesterson (Hartsburg, Mo.) and freshman Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) collected a 71 and a 76, respectively, as they each finished the tournament with a 210 and 14th-place tie.
Matt Lorenz, the senior from Fairhope, Ala., ended with a 73 over his final circuit for a 212 total and a 20th-place tie. Sophomore Joey Kirkland (West Monroe, La.) added a 72 for a 215 total and a 29th-place tie.
Junior Brian Richards (Gulf Breeze, Fla.), who played as an individual, ended with a 71 over his final circuit for a 209 score and an 11th-place tie.
"We have had a few opportunities to win this season and haven't closed the deal," said Brescher. "The positive of that is we keep putting ourselves in a spot to win. This is another example of how difficult it is to win golf tournaments. We will continue to work on our weaknesses and prepare for our next event. I have no doubt that the door to victory will open for our team soon."
The Golden Eagles return to action March 8-10 at the Tiger Invitational in Opelika, Ala., and hosted by Auburn.
