HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The final week of the regular season starts for Southern Miss baseball as they play host to Troy in a makeup of a rainout earlier in the year with a 6 p.m., Tuesday, contest at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (32-17) and Trojans (27-25) were originally scheduled to play the second week of the regular season (Feb. 20), but rain at Trustmark Park in Pearl forced the game to be postponed and eventually moved to Hattiesburg.
The two teams play for the first time since meeting in Pensacola, Fla., during the 2016 season. The Golden Eagles won that contest 6-2 and, in fact, have captured the last three games in the series.
Southern Miss looks to get back to its winning ways, after dropping two of three at Rice over the weekend. The Trojans won two of three in a home series over ULM. The Golden Eagles are 20-6 at home in 2019.
Sophomore Gabe Montenegro continues to be the hottest hitter on the Golden Eagle squad as he comes into the contest with an 11-game hitting streak. The Guatemala City, Guatemala, native collected five hits in the Rice series and is now hitting .333 on the year with seven doubles, four triples, four home runs and 18 RBI.
The Golden Eagles are also slated to send freshman right-handed pitcher Gabe Shepard (0-0, 4.26) to the mound against Troy and who will be making his sixth start of the year.
Tickets for the game can be purchased at the Pete Taylor Park Box Office two hours prior to the first pitch. Fans are reminded, especially season tickets holders, that this game is not a part of their season ticket package.
Fans will need to either purchase a ticket or exchange one of their rainout tickets in exchange for this game.  Those rainout games include the Friday & Sunday Gonzaga games, the Sunday Holy Cross Game, the Sunday Marshall game, and the Thursday Charlotte game. Â
The game can also be heard on the Southern Miss Sports Network from Learfield IMG College, including the flagship stations of 96.5 FM and 97.7 FM, as well as 104.5 HD2 in the Hattiesburg area. The can also be accessed through Tune In and for free on the Southern Miss Gameday App.
Southern Miss concludes the regular season this Thursday-Saturday as they welcome C-USA foe UAB to town. The Golden Eagles are currently tied for the league lead with Florida Atlantic, who plays host to Middle Tennessee over the final weekend of the regular season.
