MOBILE, Ala. – Drake Nightengale collected a career-high 14 strikeouts over seven innings to lead South Alabama to a 4-1 non-conference baseball victory over Southern Miss Tuesday night at Eddie Stanky Field.
The Golden Eagles (21-13) lost for the fourth time over the last five games as they dropped both games to the Jaguars (16-20) this season. Southern Miss ell to USA 15-6 earlier this month at Pete Taylor Park.
Kaleb DeLaTorre knocked in two runs to lead the Jags, including RBI singles in both the first and fifth innings, while Dakota Dailey's bunt knocked in a run and Bennett Shell saw a run come home on a Golden Eagle fielding error – both coming in the fourth - in to account for all of the Jaguar scoring.
Both teams managed just five hits, but three Jag pitchers combined to fan 17 Golden Eagles. Nightengale, who prepped at Sumrall High School, limited Southern Miss to no runs on two walks and three hits, while Andy Arguelles added a scoreless eighth with a pair of strikeouts.
USA then sent standout closer Zach Greene out to start the ninth. After a groundout by Matthew Guidry to start the frame, Bryant Bowen hit a flair to right-centerfield to extend his hitting streak to 18 games. It is the longest hitting streak since Dylan Burdeaux had an 18-gamer in 2017.
Hunter Slater followed with a double to drive in the visitor's only run. Matt Wallner then hit a screaming liner that was grabbed by shortstop Santi Montiel, before freshman Charlie Fischer fanned to end the contest.
Nightengale improved to 3-2 on the season, while USM starter Brant Blaylock fell to 0-1 in his first career start for the Golden Eagles and first outing in a month on the mound.
Blaylock limited the Jags to a run on two hits and two walks with four strikeouts over three innings of work.
Danny Lynch added two hits for the Golden Eagles as he extended his hitting streak to 11 games.
The Golden Eagles return to action at home with Charlotte for a three-game Conference USA set starting Thursday at Pete Taylor Park. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
