HATTIESBURG, Miss. – After completing its longest road swing of five games this season, the Southern Miss baseball team returns home to face Charlotte in a three-game Conference USA series beginning Thursday with a 6 p.m., contest at Pete Taylor Park.
The Golden Eagles (21-13 overall, 11-4 C-USA) remain a game behind Florida Atlantic in the league standings, as the Owls hold a 12-3 mark. Charlotte enters the weekend having posted a 14-21-1 overall mark and 5-9-1 in league play.
This will be the first regular-season meeting between the two teams since the 2016 campaign as the schools have been off each other's respective league schedule the last two seaons. The two schools, though, have played four times in the C-USA Tournament over the previous two years with the Golden Eagles winning three of those contests. In 2017, Taylor Braley hit a game-winning home run to keep Southern Miss alive in the tournament and, in last year's event, Mason Strickland pitched a complete-game shutout to propel Southern Miss into the championship game.
The Golden Eagles have won 10 of the last 11 meetings over Charlotte and won all three league series since the 49ers rejoined the league for the 2014 campaign.
Southern Miss looks to rebound from a 4-1 loss at South Alabama Tuesday night which completed that 1-4 road swing.
Junior Bryant Bowen continues to lead the Golden Eagles in hitting with a .404 batting mark, after extending his hitting streak to 18 games in his final at bat versus the Jaguars with a flair to right-center. His streak is the longest since Dylan Burdeaux enjoyed an 18-gamer in 2017.
Danny Lynch, the freshman from Jupiter, Fla., had two of the five Golden Eagle hits Tuesday to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. Lynch is hitting .304 this season.
The games can be heard on the Southern Miss Sports Network from Learfield IMG College, including the flagship stations of 96.5 FM and 97.7 FM, as well as 104.5 HD2 in the Hattiesburg area. The can also be accessed through Tune In and for free on the Southern Miss Gameday App. A paid webstream is also available through C-USA.TV.
Tickets for the games can be purchased through SouthernMissTickets.com, 1-800-844-TICK (8425) or by visiting the Pete Taylor Park Box office two hours prior to the scheduled first pitch.
